Shellac is a natural resin secreted by the lac bug (Kerria lacca), an insect native to the forests of South and Southeast Asia. Harvested from tree branches where the insects congregate, this remarkable substance is refined into dry flakes and then dissolved in alcohol to create a liquid finish. For centuries, it has been prized for its versatility, serving as everything from a protective sealant to a decorative glaze.

Historically, shellac was indispensable. Its non-conductive properties made it a pioneer in electrical insulation, and before the advent of vinyl, it was the primary component used to manufacture 78 rpm phonograph records. The grooves required a material that was hard enough to withstand a heavy needle but malleable enough to be molded. It also served as a key ingredient in traditional sealing wax, used for centuries to secure private correspondence.

In modern times, shellac remains a favorite for woodworkers, valued for the "French polish" technique which creates a deep, mirror-like clarity. Beyond furniture, it is used in the food and pharmaceutical industries—often labeled as "confectioner's glaze"—to coat candies and pills, providing a moisture barrier and a professional shine. Chemically, shellac is unique because it is soluble in alcohol but resistant to water. However, it remains sensitive to high temperatures; a hot cup of coffee placed on a shellacked surface can leave a white ring in seconds.

Interestingly, "shellac" has also entered the English lexicon as a colorful verb. In a figurative sense, to "shellac" someone means to defeat them overwhelmingly, typically in a sports or political context.
