The shelduck (Tadorna tadorna) is a striking and distinctive bird found mainly in coastal parts of Europe, North Africa, and Asia, though it can also appear inland near lakes and wetlands. Its name comes from the Middle English word "sheld," meaning variegated or pied, which suits its bold, patchwork plumage very well. The male is especially easy to recognize, with his glossy dark green head, bright red bill with a noticeable knob, and a chestnut band across his white chest. The female looks similar, though her colors are usually a little duller and she does not have the same fleshy knob on the bill.

Unlike many ducks that favor quiet freshwater ponds, shelducks are most often linked with estuaries, mudflats, and saltmarshes. There, they use their bills to search through soft mud and shallow water for small invertebrates such as snails, worms, and crustaceans. Their feeding habits make them an important part of these coastal ecosystems.

Shelducks have a notable nesting habit: they are burrow-nesters. They often use abandoned rabbit holes, rock crevices, or hollow trees to lay their eggs, which helps protect the nest from predators. This unusual choice of nesting place helps them stand out among other waterfowl. They are also social birds, though they can be territorial in the breeding season and are known for strongly defending their young.
