The term "shearwater" refers to a group of medium-to-large seabirds within the petrel family (Procellariidae). They are renowned for their remarkable ability to fly long distances. Some species, like the sooty shearwater, undertake annual migrations covering over 40,000 miles in a single year. The name "shearwater" captures their distinctive flight style: they skim, or shear, along the water's surface with their wings held stiffly, using the wind near the waves to maintain speed with very little flapping.

Found in oceans across the globe, shearwaters typically breed in burrows on remote islands or coastal cliffs to protect their young from predators. They feed primarily on fish, squid, and crustaceans, often foraging hundreds of miles away from their nesting sites.
