Petrels are a broad group of seabirds in the order Procellariiformes, the same order that includes albatrosses and shearwaters. Many are small to medium-sized birds with long wings built for gliding over open water for hours at a time. The name is often linked to Saint Peter because some kinds seem to patter across the water's surface as they feed, recalling the biblical story of walking on water.

They live across the world's oceans, with many species especially common in the Southern Hemisphere. Petrels are famous for handling strong winds and rough seas, and sailors long connected them with storms because they often appeared in unsettled weather.
