The word "septic" describes something infected, contaminated, or connected with decay, especially when bacteria are involved. It comes from the Greek word septikos, meaning "causing decay" or "rotten." Although the word can bring to mind a bad smell or filthy conditions, its most important uses are more specific than that.

For many learners, the first familiar example is a septic tank or septic system. This is a wastewater system used in places that are not connected to a public sewer. Waste flows into an underground tank, where solids settle and bacteria help break them down. In this setting, "septic" is not just a general word for "dirty"; it refers to waste and treatment systems connected with sewage.

In medicine, "septic" has a serious meaning. A septic wound, septic joint, or similar condition is infected with harmful bacteria. That infection may produce pus, spread into nearby tissue, or lead to a wider and more dangerous reaction in the body. Older medical writing often uses septicemia for blood poisoning, while modern usage more often speaks of sepsis, a life-threatening response to infection.

You may also see the word used more loosely to suggest moral or social decay, but that is much less common than the plumbing and medical senses. In most real-world use, "septic" points to infection, sewage, or bacterial decay rather than to something that is merely unpleasant.
