Sepsis is not the infection itself. It is a life-threatening condition that happens when the body's response to an infection becomes harmful and starts damaging its own tissues and organs. As this response spreads through the body, inflammation, poor blood flow, and other problems can keep vital organs from working properly.

Think of it like this: normally, your immune system acts like a well-trained guard that attacks only the enemy. In sepsis, the alarm rings too widely, and the body's defense system begins to injure healthy tissue too. This can lead to septic shock, a dangerous drop in blood pressure, as well as failure of several organs and, in severe cases, death.

It can develop from many kinds of infection, most often bacterial, but sometimes viral or fungal as well. Common sources include pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and infections in the abdomen. It is especially dangerous because the early signs, such as fever, chills, fast breathing, a racing heart, confusion, or unusual weakness, can look like less serious illness at first.

Because every minute counts, recognizing the warning signs is vital. Some public health campaigns use the acronym "TIME" to help people remember important red flags:

• Temperature (higher or lower than normal)
• Infection (signs or symptoms of a current infection)
• Mental decline (confused, sleepy, or difficult to rouse)
• Extremely ill (a patient's feeling of "impending doom")

It is a medical emergency and needs immediate treatment, often with antibiotics, intravenous fluids, and close hospital care. Early diagnosis and treatment greatly improve the chances of recovery. The word reminds us that even an ordinary infection can become very dangerous if the body's response spins out of control.
