Sensitization is the process of developing a stronger response to a stimulus over time. It can be physical, psychological, or, in some contexts, social. It is not just about feeling something in the moment; it is about the body, mind, or even public attention becoming more ready to react strongly to that thing later.

In medicine, sensitization often refers to the process that comes before or during an allergic reaction. A first exposure to a substance may cause little or no obvious reaction, but it can prepare the immune system to react more strongly later. This helps explain why later contact with pollen, pet dander, or certain foods may lead to clearer or stronger symptoms.

In psychology, sensitization describes how repeated exposure to a stimulus can lead to stronger emotional or behavioral responses instead of weaker ones. For example, someone who has lived through a loud, frightening event may become especially reactive to similar sounds later, showing a stronger startle response or more anxiety. In this sense, it is often treated as the opposite of habituation, where repeated exposure makes a response fade.

Beyond the laboratory, the word is also used in social and educational contexts to mean increasing awareness or concern about an issue. In that use, people may talk about sensitization campaigns around discrimination, inequality, health risks, or environmental problems. For example, a documentary may try to sensitize the public to the danger facing endangered species.

The key idea is that sensitization is usually gradual rather than immediate. Repeated exposure or experience leads to a stronger, clearer response. In medicine and psychology, that usually means increased reactivity. In social use, it often means increased awareness and concern.
