Tolerance has several connected meanings, and most of them center on acceptance and endurance. At its heart, it means recognizing and respecting the right of other people to have beliefs, customs, or ways of life that differ from your own, even when you disagree with them. It does not mean you must like those differences or approve of everything. Rather, it means allowing room for them and living with them peacefully. For example, a society that values tolerance makes space for different opinions and ways of living.

Beyond the social sense, "tolerance" can also describe the ability to endure discomfort, pain, stress, or difficult conditions. A marathon runner may have a high tolerance for pain, and someone under pressure may show tolerance for stress. In this use, the word points to how much of something a person can bear without breaking down or reacting strongly.

In science and medicine, tolerance often refers to a reduced response to a substance after repeated use. For example, with drugs, alcohol, or some medicines, the body may become used to the substance over time, so a larger amount is needed to produce the same effect. This is different from social tolerance, but the basic idea of "being able to handle more" connects the meanings.

Finally, "tolerance" can describe patience with imperfection, inconvenience, or minor annoyance. A teacher might show tolerance for small classroom disruptions, knowing that complete silence is not always realistic. Whether it involves accepting differences in other people, enduring physical or emotional strain, becoming less affected by a substance, or simply being patient with everyday problems, tolerance is about the ability to allow, handle, or endure something without rejecting it at once.
