Imagine a mining town in the Old West. Real cash is hard to find, so the mine owner gives workers paper they can spend at the company store. That is one common kind of scrip: money that is not official cash but can still be used to buy things. It is often issued by a company, community, or government for limited use, especially when regular money is scarce. The word is also common in finance, where it can mean a certificate showing ownership or extra shares paid to shareholders instead of cash.

"Scrip" usually refers to something that stands in for money or represents value. In the most familiar historical sense, it was substitute money issued when regular cash was scarce or inconvenient to use. In mining camps, logging towns, plantations, and other isolated places, employers sometimes paid workers in scrip that could be used at a company store or within a local system. Communities and governments have also issued it during emergencies to keep trade moving when official currency was in short supply.

The word also has an important finance meaning. It can refer to a certificate or document showing that the holder has a right to something of value, such as shares, bonds, or land. In modern business English, people also talk about a "scrip dividend" or being paid "in scrip," meaning shareholders receive extra shares instead of cash.

More broadly, the term can cover vouchers, tokens, coupons, or store credit that can be exchanged for goods or services. In all of these uses, the central idea is the same: it is not ordinary cash, but it carries value and can be exchanged, redeemed, or claimed under certain conditions.

So when you hear "scrip," think of a stand-in for money or a paper claim to value. Sometimes it is a temporary local currency, sometimes it is a voucher, and sometimes it is a financial document tied to shares or other property.
