The word "scalper" is most often used for a person who buys something in short supply and then resells it at a much higher price. The classic example is event tickets: a popular concert or playoff game goes on sale, a few people buy up large numbers of seats, and then ordinary fans have to pay far more on the resale market. The same idea is often used for sneakers, gaming consoles, limited-edition products, and other items that people badly want before supply catches up.

The tone of the word is usually negative. It suggests profit made from scarcity rather than from useful service. People often use it when they feel someone is being unfair or predatory, especially if software bots or bulk-buying methods were used to grab the items first. Depending on local laws, this kind of reselling may be restricted, regulated, or allowed, but the word itself still usually carries blame. You might hear, "Tickets sold out instantly and ended up in the hands of scalpers," or, "I refused to pay a scalper double the original price."

In another common meaning, especially in finance, a scalper is a trader who tries to make very small profits from quick price moves by buying and selling rapidly. This sense is more technical and is not always negative, though it still suggests speed and short-term gain.

The word also has an older and much darker historical origin connected to the taking of human scalps. That origin helps explain why the modern word often sounds harsh. Still, in everyday English today, "scalper" usually means an opportunistic reseller, and in some contexts it means a fast-moving short-term trader.
