Imagine enjoying a meal, only to wake up the next day with stomach cramps, fever, and diarrhea. That could be salmonellosis. It is an infection caused by Salmonella bacteria, usually spread through contaminated food, especially poultry, eggs, and unpasteurized milk. Most people get better without special treatment, but it can be serious for young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. You can think of it as your body's unpleasant response to harmful bacteria in the digestive system.

Salmonellosis is a common infection caused by Salmonella bacteria. There are many different types of Salmonella, but they often lead to similar problems in the body. People usually get this illness by eating contaminated food or, less often, by drinking contaminated water or touching infected animals and then touching their mouth. It can spread during farming, food processing, or food preparation at home if good hygiene is not followed.

Symptoms typically appear 12–72 hours after infection and include diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, vomiting, and sometimes headache. Most people recover within four to seven days without needing antibiotics. However, severe cases can lead to dehydration and require hospitalization.

The word "salmonellosis" usually appears in discussions about food safety, public health, and medicine. You might see it in news reports about food recalls, in research on outbreaks, or in a doctor's office when someone is trying to find the cause of an illness. Proper cooking, careful food handling, washing hands and surfaces, and avoiding cross-contamination are important ways to prevent it. So while it can sound alarming, careful habits in the kitchen can greatly lower the risk.
