Gastroenteritis is the inflammation of the stomach and intestines, a condition that causes discomfort and disruption to your digestive system. The word itself breaks down nicely: "gastro" refers to the stomach, "entero" relates to the intestines, and "itis" signifies inflammation. So, literally, it's an inflammation of both!

While often called the "stomach flu," gastroenteritis is not related to influenza, the respiratory virus that causes the seasonal flu. Instead, it is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection, often caught through contaminated food, water, or close contact with someone who is infected. Common culprits include norovirus and rotavirus (especially in children), as well as bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli.

Symptoms typically appear within 12-48 hours of exposure and can range from mild discomfort to severe illness. These often include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, and dehydration. While most cases clear up on their own within a few days with rest and plenty of fluids, severe cases may require medical attention, especially in infants, older adults, or people with weakened immune systems.

You might hear gastroenteritis discussed in public health settings during outbreaks linked to contaminated food ("a recent outbreak of norovirus-related gastroenteritis was traced back to a local salad bar"). It is also a common diagnosis when someone has sudden digestive distress. While it is rarely life-threatening for healthy people, understanding its causes and symptoms can help you protect yourself and others from this unpleasant, but usually temporary, illness.
