A salesman is a man whose job is to sell goods or services. You might picture the classic traveling salesman from old stories, going from place to place with things to offer. Today, a salesman could work in a shop, at a car dealership, or for a company selling software or other services. His main job is to understand what people need and help them choose what is being offered.

The word can also be used in a wider way for someone who is very good at persuading people. For example, someone might call a politician a good salesman of ideas. Still, in modern everyday English, many people prefer words like "salesperson" or a more specific job title because they sound more neutral.

The word "salesman" usually refers to a man whose work is selling goods or services. In older books and films, he is often shown as a traveling salesman, moving from town to town with samples and trying to win customers with charm and confidence. That older picture is still familiar, but the word is also used for modern jobs in stores, offices, and business settings.

A salesman may sell clothes, cars, insurance, machines, or software. In some jobs, he speaks directly with customers in person. In others, he talks by phone, email, or online meetings. The central idea is the same: he explains what is being sold, answers questions, and tries to persuade the customer to buy. A good salesman is often seen as someone who listens well, understands what a person wants, and offers something that fits those needs.

The word can also be used in a figurative way. If someone is very good at making others accept an idea, a plan, or a point of view, people may call that person a salesman. In that sense, the word is about persuasion, not only about a job.

At the same time, "salesman" is gender-specific, so many people now choose "salesperson" instead, especially in formal or modern usage. Sometimes "salesman" can sound a little old-fashioned, and in some contexts it may suggest someone who pushes too hard. Even so, the basic meaning stays clear: a man who sells something, or someone described as having that same persuasive style.
