The word "roundabout" has three main meanings, all stemming from the idea of a circular or circuitous path. Most commonly, it refers to a circular road junction where traffic moves around a central island. These are popular alternatives to traditional stops because they improve traffic flow and safety. When driving, you yield to those already in the circle before merging into the flow. In British English, a "roundabout" also refers to a piece of playground equipment—a merry-go-round that spins children in circles until they're dizzy with fun!

Beyond the physical, "roundabout" is an adjective for communication that is indirect or circuitous. When someone is being roundabout, they avoid getting straight to the point, perhaps by offering long explanations or unnecessary detours. For example: "He was being deliberately roundabout when asked where he had been." The connection is clear: whether physically on a road or figuratively in conversation, you are taking the long way around instead of moving in a straight line.
