The word "rotary" fundamentally describes something involving circular motion or a turning movement. Many people think first of a rotary traffic intersection, a term used in some regions for a roundabout, where vehicles move around a central island. These were designed to keep traffic moving through a continuous circular path instead of stopping at a standard intersection.

However, "rotary" extends far beyond roadways. It is often used for objects, tools, and machines that work by turning. The name Rotary Club comes from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' workplaces.
