The name comes from the Latin word "rota," meaning wheel, because under a microscope the virus looks wheel-like. It spreads through the fecal-oral route, which means a person swallows tiny particles from infected stool. This can happen after touching contaminated hands, surfaces, toys, food, or water and then touching the mouth.
For many years, rotavirus was a major public health problem and caused many deaths, especially in low-resource countries. The introduction of effective vaccines has greatly reduced both the number of infections and how severe they are. These vaccines are now routinely recommended for infants in many parts of the world.
Most children recover with supportive care, especially plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, but some need hospital treatment. So while it is a common illness, it can still be dangerous. Knowing how it spreads and why vaccination matters helps protect young children.
