For many years, rotavirus was a major public health problem and caused many deaths, especially in low-resource countries. The introduction of effective vaccines has greatly reduced both the number of infections and how severe they are. These vaccines are now routinely recommended for infants in many parts of the world.

Most children recover with supportive care, especially plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, but some need hospital treatment. So while it is a common illness, it can still be dangerous. Knowing how it spreads and why vaccination matters helps protect young children.
