nounadjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /rˈaɪtɪst/

US

Description

The term "rightist" usually describes a person, group, or idea connected with the political right. In many cases, it suggests support for tradition, private property, individual responsibility, limited government, or conservative social values. The meaning is not exactly the same everywhere, though. In one country, it may point more to free-market economics; in another, it may point more to nationalism, religion, or social order. You will often hear the word in political discussions, especially when people compare right-wing and left-wing views.
