A response is what happens after something else happens—it's how you react to a question, an event, or something another person does. Think of it like throwing a ball and someone catching it.

You might give a spoken answer to a question ("Yes," "No," "I don't know"), but it is not always spoken. A dog wags its tail after being petted, and your body might react with goosebumps when you hear beautiful music. In science, it can also mean the way a plant turns toward sunlight or how your immune system reacts to a virus. Sometimes, no reply says a lot too—silence can be an answer.

The word "response" refers to a reaction, answer, or reply to something—whether it is a question, an action, an event, or a situation.
