Resorption describes a process in which material that has already formed is gradually broken down, dissolved, removed, or taken back into the surrounding system. The word appears in several fields, but the central idea stays the same: something that exists is no longer simply left in place; instead, it is reduced and its material is lost or reused.

In biology, resorption is especially common in discussions of bone remodeling. Your bones are not fixed structures; they are constantly renewed. Specialized cells called osteoclasts break down old bone so the body can rebuild it and keep it strong. In other biological settings, the word can describe tissue or structures that are gradually removed and absorbed by the body. For example, a tadpole's tail may be resorbed as the animal develops, and doctors may use the term when talking about material in the body that slowly disappears because the body breaks it down.

Dentists use the term in a very clear and common way. Root resorption means that part of a tooth root is being broken down and lost. This can happen naturally in baby teeth as they make way for adult teeth, or it can happen in permanent teeth because of injury, pressure, or disease. In geology, resorption can describe crystals or minerals that begin to dissolve again after conditions around them change, such as contact with magma or reactive fluids.

The key idea is that resorption is more than simple disappearance. It suggests an active process of breakdown, dissolving, or bodily removal, often with at least some of the material being taken back in or reused. That is why the word fits so well in stories about bones, teeth, developing bodies, and even changing rocks: something that was there is gradually undone and folded back into a larger process.
