The word "deposition" stems from the Latin depositio, meaning "a laying down." This concept of "placing" or "setting" something manifests in three distinct ways.

The first is geological and physical. In nature, deposition occurs when wind, water, or ice drops sediment—like silt, volcanic ash, or pebbles—in a new location. Over millennia, this process builds landforms like river deltas and sand dunes. In the world of physics, it also refers to the "phase change" where a gas turns directly into a solid without becoming a liquid first, such as when frost forms on a freezing morning. In science and engineering, it can also mean laying down a thin layer of material onto a surface, like a coating.

The second is the legal definition. A deposition is often part of the "discovery" phase of a lawsuit. It is a witness's sworn, out-of-court testimony. During a deposition, lawyers ask questions, and the witness's answers are transcribed by a court reporter. This "laid down" record can be used as evidence during the trial, especially if the witness is unable to appear in person.

The third is the act of removal. Historically, a deposition is the formal act of ousting a person from a high office or throne. While we often think of deposition as "building up" (like sediment), this meaning focuses on "taking down" an authority figure.
