To resign means to voluntarily leave a job, office, or position of responsibility. It is a formal act that involves notifying an employer or organization of your decision and relinquishing your duties. Unlike being fired or dismissed, resigning is a choice made by the individual, often marked by a sense of professional closure.

The word comes from the Latin resignare, meaning "to unseal, cancel, or give back." That history helps explain the sense of giving up a role or handing it back. Because of this, the act often carries a sense of formality and may involve a written resignation letter that gives notice and an effective date.

While "quit" and "resign" are often used interchangeably in casual conversation, resign is the preferred term for formal roles, memberships on boards, or elected offices. A construction worker might quit a job site, but a politician would resign from office. People resign for many reasons: to pursue new career paths, to relocate, or on principle—such as a treasurer resigning after discovering financial irregularities within their organization.

Beyond the professional world, the word has a secondary, more internal meaning: to resign oneself to something. This describes the act of accepting an unpleasant but inevitable situation. Just as an official accepts the end of their term, a person might resign themselves to a long wait or a difficult fate.
