Reproduction is fundamentally about making more, either by producing new life or by making a new copy of something that already exists. In biology, it is the process through which living things produce offspring, allowing their kind to continue. This can happen sexually, with genetic material from two parents, or asexually, from a single parent. For example, a sunflower can make seeds through sexual reproduction, while a bacterium can split into two identical cells through asexual reproduction.

But reproduction is not limited to the natural world. It also refers to recreating something such as a work of art, a sound, a text, or even the results of a scientific study. When you reproduce a painting, you make a copy that matches the original as closely as possible. When scientists reproduce an experiment, they repeat it to see whether they get the same result. The word comes from Latin parts that suggest the idea of bringing something forth again. That fits both main meanings: producing new life and making a copy of something.
