Representation isn't just about artists painting portraits. It's how something stands in for something else, like a symbol for an idea, or how someone speaks on behalf of others. Think of a map: it's a representation of the real world, not the world itself. Or consider your class president; they give representation to the student body by voicing their concerns and needs. It can also mean how accurately something is shown: a fair representation versus a biased one. A good lawyer provides strong legal representation for a client in court.

Representation is a surprisingly versatile word with several interconnected meanings. At its core, it's about standing in for something else. This could be physical—like a photograph representing a person—or abstract—like the number "5" representing a quantity of five objects.

In art and media, representation refers to how subjects are depicted or portrayed. A realistic representation strives for accuracy, while an abstract representation might focus on conveying emotions or ideas. Critically, we often discuss who is represented, and how. Is there fair representation of diverse groups in the news? Are certain communities misrepresented or stereotyped?

Beyond art, representation also means acting on behalf of someone else. A political representative voices the concerns of their constituents. A lawyer provides legal representation for their client. Similarly, a talent agent provides representation for an actor when negotiating contracts.

Finally, representation can refer to the way something is presented or understood. "His account of events was a distorted representation of what actually happened" suggests he wasn't telling the truth. Or "The data offers a clear representation of the problem."
