To reincarnate means to be born again in another body or form after death, or to appear again as a new version of someone or something from the past. In its main sense, the word belongs to religious, spiritual, and philosophical discussions about life, death, and what may come after.

The idea is deeply rooted in traditions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. In these belief systems, a soul, mind, or continuing life force may enter a new life after death. This new life may be shaped by karma, meaning that a person's actions in one life can affect what happens in the next. The new form may be human or, in some traditions, animal or another kind of being. The idea is not simply "coming back to life" in the same body; it is about beginning life again in a different form as part of an ongoing cycle.

Outside religion, the word often appears in novels, films, and everyday speech. A story may describe a child as the reincarnate form of a long-dead ruler, or suggest that two people meet again across different lifetimes. In these cases, the word carries the idea of a past life continuing in a new body. Writers also use it when characters seem to repeat old patterns, return to unfinished duties, or carry memories from another age.

The term can also be used metaphorically. In that wider sense, it suggests that an older thing has come back in a fresh shape. Someone might say a new actor feels like an old movie star reincarnate, or that a modern design is the reincarnate version of a classic style. Even in these uses, the core idea stays the same: something from the past seems to live again in a new form.
