Government agencies also redact information from files released under Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. However, the practice is not limited to official settings. A journalist might redact a source's name to protect that person, or a business might redact personal details before sharing a report.
Redaction can be done physically (using heavy markers or tape) but is increasingly performed digitally using software that blacks out text or replaces it with symbols.
