The word itself comes from "radio" (referencing radiation) and "graph" (meaning to record or depict). Essentially, a radiograph is an image produced by passing radiation through an object – most commonly X-rays, but sometimes gamma rays or other forms.

The resulting image – the radiograph – isn't a perfect representation of what's inside. Different materials absorb radiation differently, creating contrast in the picture. Dense materials like bone appear white, while air-filled spaces show up dark. Skilled interpreters are needed to accurately analyze these images and draw meaningful conclusions.
