Furthermore, nuclear power plants harness the energy released from radioactive processes to generate carbon-free electricity.
The term radioactive was coined by Marie Curie, derived from the Latin word radius, referring to the "rays" emitted by unstable atoms. While the phenomenon of radioactivity was first discovered by Henri Becquerel in 1896, it remains one of the most important ideas in science, with both destructive potential and useful applications that continue to shape our modern world.
