irradiate

To irradiate means to expose something to radiation or other radiant energy, such as light, heat, electromagnetic waves, or particles. The word is often used in scientific, medical, and technical contexts, but it also has an older, more general sense connected with shining light on something.

Historically, "irradiate" could simply mean "to shine upon" or "to light up." You can picture a lamp irradiating a painting or the sun irradiating a valley at dawn. Over time, though, the word became more strongly linked to the scientific idea of radiation: energy sent out as waves or particles.

In medicine, doctors irradiate cancerous tumors with focused beams of radiation to kill or damage cancer cells. In food processing, irradiation is used to reduce bacteria, insects, or other harmful organisms and to help food stay safe longer. In science, researchers may irradiate materials with light or other forms of energy to observe how those materials change or respond.

Figuratively, the word can also suggest spreading brightness, warmth, or energy. A person's smile might seem to irradiate a room, or a hopeful mood might irradiate a difficult moment. In these cases, the idea is not literal radiation, but the sense of something shining outward and affecting what is around it.

So whether it is the sun falling on your skin, a doctor treating disease, or a smile seeming to light up a whole room, to irradiate is to send energy, light, or brightness outward onto something, either literally or figuratively.
