The term "radiative" relates to the emission, transfer, or effects of energy in the form of radiation. In science, this often means electromagnetic radiation, which includes radio waves, microwaves, visible light, ultraviolet rays, X-rays, and gamma rays. A process, object, or effect can be called radiative when it gives off radiation, involves radiation, or is caused by it.

While it is often linked with heat, as in a heater warming a room without direct contact, the term is important across many scientific fields. In astronomy, radiative transfer describes how light moves through space and interacts with matter, helping us study distant stars and galaxies. In atmospheric science, radiative forcing refers to a change in Earth's energy balance caused by things such as greenhouse gases, which affect how much energy stays in the atmosphere or escapes into space.

The term also describes processes driven by the giving off of energy. For example, radiative cooling is the loss of heat through radiation. This is why the ground can become colder than the air on a still, clear night, sometimes leading to "radiation frost." In technology, radiative cooling is used to remove heat in systems where moving parts, like fans, are not practical.

It is important to distinguish "radiative" from the more common word "radiant." While "radiant" is often used more broadly, and even figuratively, as in a "radiant smile," "radiative" is mainly a technical and scientific term. It focuses on the physical process by which energy is emitted, transferred, or influences its surroundings. Whether we are talking about the glow of a lightbulb, the study of distant galaxies, or the balance of our planet's climate, "radiative" points to the role radiation plays in how energy moves.
