The word "racist" describes a person, idea, action, or policy that treats race as a reason to judge people as better, worse, more worthy, or less worthy. At its core, it involves prejudice, discrimination, or hostility based on race. It is not simply a matter of personal dislike. It is about attaching unfair meaning or value to race and acting on that belief.

For example, redlining, the practice of denying loans or services to people in certain areas because of race, is widely recognized as a racist policy.

When people use the word, they are usually pointing to both belief and effect. Someone may openly express hateful ideas, or they may support practices that produce unfair racial outcomes. In either case, the word suggests serious moral and social harm. Understanding it requires looking at both individual behavior and the larger patterns that shape how people are treated.
