Racism is prejudice, discrimination, or hostility directed at people because of their race, or the belief that some races are naturally better than others. It is not only a matter of personal feelings; it can work at several levels, including personal, interpersonal, institutional, and systemic.

Imagine a beautiful garden with different flowers. If someone decides only roses are worthy of water and sunlight while letting other flowers wither, that is a metaphor for racism. The "rose-lovers" have the power to control resources and opportunities, creating an unfair advantage for one group over others.

Historically, racism has manifested in brutal forms like slavery, segregation, and colonialism—where one race actively dominated and exploited another. But it doesn't always look so dramatic. It can be found in microaggressions (subtle, often unintentional expressions of prejudice), biased media representation, unequal access to education or healthcare, and discriminatory housing practices.

Systemic racism refers to the ways racism is embedded within institutions and policies, creating persistent racial disparities even without conscious intent. For example, school funding tied to property taxes can perpetuate inequalities because neighborhoods with larger minority populations often have lower property values due to historical discrimination.

Understanding racism requires acknowledging its historical roots, recognizing its various forms, and actively working towards dismantling systems of oppression. It's a deeply ingrained societal issue that demands ongoing critical reflection and a commitment to equity and justice.
