In that older sense, it can sound warm, playful, or childish. But in present-day English, that meaning is much less common on its own, because the word is now strongly linked to sexual and insulting uses.

Today, the best-known meaning is a vulgar slang term for the female genitals. It may be used crudely, sexually, or in ways that reduce a woman to her body, so it is usually not suitable in polite, formal, or professional speech. In some contexts, people also use it with a softer or more erotic tone, but it still remains strongly informal and risky.

Another common use is as an insult for a person seen as weak, timid, or easily frightened. Although it is often aimed at men, it can be used for anyone. This insulting sense is widely seen as offensive because it connects femininity with weakness and is tied to sexist attitudes.

Because these meanings are so far apart, context matters a great deal. In an old-fashioned story, the word may simply mean "cat." In a modern conversation, however, many listeners will first hear either the sexual meaning or the insult.
