To describe someone as "psychopathic" is to suggest a pattern of traits such as superficial charm, dishonesty, manipulation, shallow emotions, and a strong lack of remorse or empathy. The word is often used for people who seem able to hurt, use, or deceive others without feeling much guilt. Some may also show impulsive, reckless, or antisocial behavior. Crucially, psychopathy is not the same as psychosis. A person with psychosis may lose touch with reality, but a psychopathic person is usually understood as being aware of reality and of what they are doing.

Researchers often treat these traits as existing on a spectrum, meaning a person may show more or fewer of them. Still, it is a mistake to assume that every person described this way is a violent criminal.

For instance: "The investigator suspected the perpetrator was psychopathic, noting how calm and unmoved he seemed while describing the crime." It is a word that carries a lot of weight, so it should be used with care and precision.
