The word "psychic" often brings to mind fortune tellers and crystal balls, but people use it in a few different ways. Most often, it describes someone who is believed to have abilities beyond the normal human senses, such as reading thoughts, sensing things far away, or knowing something before it happens.

It can also be used in a looser way for someone who seems unusually intuitive or quick to sense what is going on. You might say a detective has a "psychic knack" for solving crimes, meaning they seem to know where to look without being told. Some people believe these abilities are real, while others see them as guesswork or imagination.

The term "psychic" comes from the Greek word psyche, meaning "soul" or "mind." In its most common modern use, it refers to a person who is believed to have extrasensory perception, often shortened to ESP. That means getting information in ways that do not depend on the usual five senses. People may connect this idea with telepathy, which is thought-reading; clairvoyance, which is seeing or sensing things at a distance; precognition, which is knowing about future events; or psychometry, which is getting impressions from an object or person through touch.

In everyday speech, the word is also used more loosely. Someone may be called "psychic" if they seem to know what others are feeling, notice hidden patterns, or make surprisingly accurate guesses. A person might talk about a "psychic feeling" when they had a strong sense that something was about to happen, even if they could not explain why. In this kind of use, the word often overlaps with ideas like instinct, intuition, or sensitivity.

At the same time, the word carries a strong link to the supernatural, and not everyone accepts those claims as real. Many scientists remain skeptical because careful testing has not produced solid, repeatable proof of psychic powers. Even so, the idea remains popular in stories, films, and conversation. Depending on the context, "psychic" can describe a claimed supernatural gift, a person with a strong intuitive sense, or something connected to the mind and inner feelings.
