Imagine a magician doing a trick. For a moment, what you see looks real, but it is not. That feeling is close to the idea behind "pseudo." The word comes from Greek and means "false." It describes something that seems to be one thing while not truly being that thing.

"Pseudo" is not always about a direct lie. More often, it suggests that something has the appearance of being real, proper, or complete, but the truth underneath is different. A "pseudonym" is a false name used by a writer. The writing may be real, but the public name is not their own. A "pseudo-scientist" may talk as if they follow science, but their work does not have good proof behind it.

You will often see "pseudo-" used as a prefix before other words. It creates terms like "pseudocode," which is a simple way to describe the steps of a program, or "pseudoclassic," which can describe something made to look classic without truly being classic. In each case, the prefix signals that something is only partly real, only on the surface, or not the genuine version.

The word often carries a slightly negative tone. It can suggest that something is shallow, copied, or only pretending to be the real thing. Someone with "pseudo-sophistication," for example, may appear polished and knowledgeable, but that impression does not go very deep. So when you see "pseudo," think of something that looks convincing from the outside but is not fully true or genuine inside.
