The word pretend describes acting as if something is true when you know it is not, or imagining a situation that does not really exist. It can be playful, polite, or sometimes dishonest, depending on why a person is doing it.

A child might pretend that a stuffed animal is alive and talking, building a whole little world around that idea. This kind of make-believe play is an important part of growing up. But pretending is not limited to childhood; people do it all through life. You might pretend to be interested in someone's story to be polite, or pretend you did not notice a mess to avoid an awkward moment.

Pretend can also be used when you invite someone to imagine something with you: "Let's pretend we're pirates sailing the high seas!" In this sense, the word opens the door to play, stories, and creativity. Sometimes people also pretend to be someone else, such as an undercover police officer who pretends to be a criminal.

Pretending is often harmless, but it can have a negative side if it is used to trick people or hide the truth. In many everyday situations, though, it is simply a way to play, handle social moments, or protect someone's feelings. So whether you are building an imaginary world or putting on a polite smile, pretend is about stepping away from reality for a moment.
