A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun (called its object) and other words in a sentence. This relationship can show location, direction, time, or another kind of connection. It is like a little bridge connecting different parts of your thought!

Think about this: "The book is on the table." "On" tells us where the book is in relation to the table. Or consider: "We traveled to Italy." Here, "to" shows direction. Prepositions can also indicate time: "I will see you in an hour," or connection: "She is interested in art."

Common prepositions include words like about, above, across, after, against, along, among, around, as, at, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond, by, concerning, despite, down, during, except, for, from, in, into, like, near, of, off, on, onto, opposite, out, over, past, regarding, since, through, throughout, to, toward, under, underneath, until, up, upon, with, and within. (It's a long list!)

Prepositions usually come before their object. For example: "The cat jumped over the fence." ("Over" is the preposition, "the fence" is its object). Sometimes prepositions end sentences—which is perfectly acceptable! ("What are you waiting for?")
