Pronunciation

UK

  • /pˈəʊstmɑːk/

US

  • /ˈpoʊstˌmɑrk/

Description

A postmark is the mark a postal service puts on a letter or package to show when and where it was mailed or processed. You often see it printed over a stamp, which also helps show that the stamp has been used. In everyday life, it can serve as proof that something was mailed by a certain date. On old letters, a clear postmark can also tell you about the item's age and where it passed through.

Sometimes the mark is plain and only shows the date and place. Sometimes it is made for a special event or location. Either way, it is a basic part of how mail is handled.
