A positivist follows the philosophical view that real knowledge comes from observable facts, evidence, and careful testing. In this view, the best way to understand the world is through what we can directly notice, record, and measure, rather than through pure guesswork or ideas that cannot be checked.

The term is closely linked to the 19th-century thinker Auguste Comte, who argued that society should be studied with the same care as the natural world. He believed human thought moved through three stages: theological (based on faith), metaphysical (based on abstract ideas), and positive (based on science). In his view, the positive stage offered the surest path to reliable knowledge and social order.

A positivist usually values objectivity, verification, and clear evidence. They tend to distrust claims that cannot be tested, measured, or compared with observable facts. In practice, this often means preferring data, experiments, records, and direct observation over intuition, tradition, or unsupported belief.

You'll encounter the word most often in academic contexts, especially in fields like history, sociology, and political science. For example, a positivist historian might focus on letters, records, and other documents to rebuild events as accurately as possible, while trying to avoid personal interpretation. A positivist sociologist might use surveys, numbers, and statistical patterns to study how people behave in large groups.

However, this approach has also been criticized. Some people argue that it pays too little attention to values, bias, meaning, and personal experience. Human life is not always easy to reduce to numbers, and critics say this way of thinking can miss that. Even so, it has had a strong influence on modern science and social research.

So, if someone is described as a "positivist," they are usually being presented as a person who trusts observation, evidence, and the scientific method above all else when deciding what counts as knowledge.
