ponce

The history of ponce is rougher and more specific than many people realize. In older use, especially in British English, it meant a pimp: a man living off a prostitute's earnings. That older sense is still part of the word's history, even though many modern speakers are more likely to meet it in other slang uses. Over time, it also became a derogatory insult for a man seen as effeminate, overly refined, or not masculine enough, which gives the word a clear insulting edge.

In contemporary British English, one of the most common patterns is the verb phrase "ponce about" or "ponce around." In that use, it describes someone moving about in a showy, silly, or affected way, often with the suggestion that they are wasting time. For example, "He's just poncing about in his new car instead of helping us move." The picture is of someone more interested in display than in getting anything useful done.

Another important modern use is scrounging. To "ponce something off someone" means to get a small thing from them for free, such as a cigarette, a drink, or a bit of money. Depending on context, it can suggest cheekiness, laziness, or a habit of living off other people. Even when the speaker only means "show-off" or "scrounger," the older insulting meanings have not disappeared, so the word still carries real risk of offense. It is best understood as coarse British slang with several related meanings, nearly all of them disapproving.
