Description

Polythene, also spelled "polyethylene," is a common plastic used for bags, wrapping, bottles, and many other everyday things. It is light, flexible, and water-resistant, which is why it is used so often in packaging and storage.

You might notice it in a shopping bag, a rubbish bag, or a sheet of plastic covering something outdoors. For example, you could say, "The food was wrapped in polythene," or, "The plants were covered with polythene to keep off the rain." Most types do not break down easily, so recycling it matters.
