It is a very common plastic and is used for many everyday things. But it is not just one material. Discovered accidentally in 1933 by Reginald Gibson and Eric Fawcett, it quickly became a revolutionary material due to its flexibility, low cost, and resistance to chemicals.
There are several different types of polyethylene, categorized by their density: Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is flexible and used for things like plastic bags, squeeze bottles, and cling wrap. High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is stronger and more rigid, making it ideal for milk jugs, detergent bottles, and pipes. Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) offers a balance of flexibility and strength, often found in films and packaging. Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) is incredibly strong and abrasion-resistant, used in heavy-duty applications like bulletproof vests and artificial joints.
Because it's so widely used, polyethylene has become a significant environmental concern due to its slow rate of decomposition. However, many forms of it can be recycled, with HDPE commonly marked as #2 and LDPE often marked as #4. Efforts are also underway to develop more sustainable production methods and improve recycling rates.
