The word "pollard" has a long history in forestry and traditional land management. As a verb, it means to cut off the upper branches of a tree while leaving the trunk and main limbs intact. This was not done randomly; it was a practical way to encourage a thick growth of new shoots from the top of the tree. Those shoots could then be harvested again and again for fuel, fencing, basket work, or sometimes animal fodder. Because the cutting was done high up, the fresh growth was often kept out of reach of grazing animals, which let people gather wood without felling the whole tree.

You'll often see pollarded trees near waterways or in meadows, because this was a common practice on shared farmland. These trees have a very distinctive look: thick, gnarled trunks with clusters of slender branches growing from the top, which often makes them look old and full of character.

However, "pollard" is not just the action. It can also mean a tree that has been cut in this way, and in older or more specialized use it can mean the shoots that grow back or the wood taken from them. While the word is less common in everyday modern English, you may still see it in writing about ecology, traditional woodland management, or historical landscapes. It carries the idea of a long relationship between people and trees: using what the tree provides while allowing it to grow again.
