poliovirus

Poliovirus is the virus that causes poliomyelitis, or polio, an infectious disease that can sometimes lead to permanent paralysis. It enters the body through the mouth, usually through contaminated water, food, or contact with infected material, and multiplies in the intestines. Many infections cause no clear symptoms. In more serious cases, however, the virus reaches the nervous system, damages nerve cells, and can cause paralysis, often in the legs.

For much of the 20th century, polio outbreaks were a major public health crisis. Many children and adults were left with lasting disabilities, and some needed devices such as braces, wheelchairs, or iron lungs to survive. The development of effective vaccines, including Jonas Salk's inactivated vaccine and Albert Sabin's oral vaccine, changed the course of that history and made large outbreaks much rarer.

Today, widespread vaccination has stopped routine spread in most of the world. Wild poliovirus still remains endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and outbreaks can also appear in places where vaccination rates fall too low. The long global effort to stop this virus shows how much public health depends on prevention, trust, and international cooperation. Learning about it is not only a lesson in science but also a reminder of how a once-feared childhood disease was pushed back by vaccination.
