Poliomyelitis, commonly known as polio, is a highly infectious viral disease that primarily affects young children. It invades the nervous system and can cause paralysis in a matter of hours, most often in the legs. Before widespread vaccination, polio outbreaks were common and terrifying, particularly during the summer months, leading to annual epidemics. Images from the mid-20th century showing "iron lungs," large mechanical respirators that helped patients breathe, are a heartbreaking reminder of the disease's most severe cases.
