Imagine a creature with a wide body, four strong flippers, and the very long neck of a snake. That's roughly what a plesiosaur looked like! These fascinating reptiles lived during the age of dinosaurs and spent their lives in the ocean. They were not fish, though; they had to come up for air. Paleontologists believe many plesiosaurs hunted fish, squid, and other sea animals, using their necks to reach out and snatch prey. Plesiosaurs were a diverse order of large marine reptiles that thrived during the Mesozoic Era—the age of dinosaurs. The long-necked varieties, like the iconic Elasmosaurus, had remarkably long necks that made them stand out even among other marine reptiles. These are the creatures most often depicted in popular culture.
Fossils of plesiosaurs have been found all over the world, from North America and Europe to Australia and South Africa, proving they were widespread throughout ancient oceans. They likely hunted fish and cephalopods, using their powerful flippers for propulsion and their long necks to ambush prey from a distance.
While often portrayed as monstrous sea serpents in folklore (even inspiring legends of the Loch Ness Monster), plesiosaurs were a real and remarkable group of reptiles that ruled the prehistoric seas for over 100 million years before going extinct alongside the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period. Studying their fossils helps us understand the evolution of marine life and the complex ecosystems of our planet's ancient past.
