ichthyosaur

Ichthyosaurs were a diverse group of extinct marine reptiles that thrived during the Mesozoic Era, appearing about 250 million years ago and disappearing roughly 90 million years ago. They were not dinosaurs, although they lived during the same broad span of time. Instead, they were reptiles that evolved bodies very similar in shape to modern dolphins and whales, an example of convergent evolution.

The name "ichthyosaur" comes from the Greek words ichthys, meaning fish, and sauros, meaning lizard, which describes their outward appearance. However, they were not lizards that simply returned to the sea. They were fully aquatic reptiles with their own special adaptations for life underwater.

Unlike most reptiles, which lay eggs on land, ichthyosaurs gave birth to live young, a major advantage for animals that lived entirely in the ocean. Their bodies were streamlined and spindle-shaped, and they moved through the water with strong tails and flippers that evolved from limbs. They ranged in size from less than a meter long to over 20 meters (65 feet), with some species ranking among the largest marine reptiles ever known.

Fossil evidence shows that many ichthyosaurs were fast predators that fed on fish, squid, and other sea animals. Their fossils have been found around the world, giving scientists useful clues about ancient ocean life and how animals changed over time. Studying these "fish lizards" helps us understand how creatures adapt to life in water and how rich prehistoric life once was.
