noun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /plˈætfɔːm/

US

  • /ˈplætˌfɔrm/

Description

A platform can be many things! Think of a train platform: it is the raised area where you wait before getting on the train. It can also mean something that gives support or a place to act from. A political party has a platform, meaning its main beliefs and policies. More and more, we also talk about platforms online, like Facebook, YouTube, or Instagram. These are digital spaces where people connect, share information, and build communities.

You might launch a new product on a platform, meaning you use that service to reach people. Someone may also say a famous person has a large platform, meaning they have a strong public voice and can reach many listeners. The word comes from the French plat-forme, which originally meant a flat surface.
