A plateau is a large, fairly flat area of land that stands higher than the land around it. In geography, it describes a raised region with a level surface. Some plateaus form through volcanic activity, while others are created when parts of the Earth's crust are pushed upward over time. The Tibetan Plateau, for example, is one of the highest and largest in the world.
