A mesa is an elevated landform with a flat top and steep sides, usually found in dry or semi-arid regions. The name comes from Spanish, meaning "table," which matches its broad, level top. A mesa is not just striking scenery; it is a geological formation shaped over long periods of time by erosion.

Here is the basic idea: layers of rock build up over time, often in roughly horizontal bands. Later, wind, rain, and rivers wear away the softer rock around and beneath a harder top layer. That harder layer helps protect the land under it, leaving behind the flat-topped shape.

People often confuse mesas with buttes and plateaus. A butte is usually smaller and narrower, while a plateau is much larger and stretches across a wider area. In many cases, a plateau can wear down into mesas, and mesas can continue to erode into buttes.

Some of the best-known examples are in the Southwestern United States, including places such as Monument Valley and Mesa Verde in Colorado. Mesa Verde is especially well known because ancient Puebloan communities built homes in the cliffs there. Mesas can also appear in other dry parts of the world. Besides their geological interest, they may also carry cultural and historical importance for nearby communities. When people picture the open, rugged beauty of the American Southwest, these flat-topped landforms are often part of that image.
